(Other: Ludum Dare games, etc)

April 2018: After a lot of time away from game development (basically three years), I jumped into Ludum Dare again for the 41st competition. I made a game called Deal Them 21, which I’m actually pretty happy with! See details (and play) here.

April 2013: I made a quick Twine entry for Ludum Dare 26 (Theme: Minimalism). I was too (happily) busy with Different Games to do anything else. Click here.

December 2012: My Ludum Dare 25 (Theme: You Are the Villain) game is something I might build into something more substantial some other time. It’s called You Are The Level Designer.

Spring 2012: I did a couple of projects with Amazon’s Mechanical Turk. Mechanical Turk is a service that allows people to complete small jobs (HITs: Human Intelligence Tasks) for money. In one, I paid workers $0.03 each to copy/paste the Heart Sutra, in reference to the tradition of Shakyo.

I also repurposed the common HIT of flagging inappropriate images to challenge people’s compartmentalization of the meat production process. I had eighty workers look at three images: one of a living pig, one of a pig being slaughtered, and one of pork chops on a grill. They could flag any of these as “offensive, repulsive, or otherwise disgusting”. They could also write comments. The results are as follows:

  • 90% of workers flagged the photo of the pig being slaughtered.
  • Only 3.75% flagged the pork chops as well.
  • Comments from workers who flagged the slaughter photo but not the meat photo:
    • “2nd is disgusting”
    • “I am not a vegetarian, otherwise image nr 3 would have been offensive as well :)”
    • “Food processing is not always preety.”
    • “Naked man cutting a pig”
    • “The second image which is checked is kind of offensive one, since it shows cutting a pig and the blood stains make the image more disgusting.”
    • “YUCK..!!THIS IS DISGUSTING..!KILLING A PIG.”
    • “horrible slaughter of poor pig”

Taking care to note that the image does contain graphic depictions of animal slaughter, you can see what the task looked like here.

I characterize these explorations of Mechanical Turk as MIREs: Materially Incentivized Rhetorical Encounters.

March 2012: I made this ridiculous game with FlashPunk for Pirate Kart V. It’s called Man Dog Macree. It’s really dumb. In a good way, though? I made it in like 3 hours and most of that time was just gathering audio, so… game jams! Wee!

January 2012: 010000010010000001000011011011110111000001111001 is a simple game I made in a few hours as a last minute entry into the SOPAJam. Click here to play it. Be sure to play through it more than once.
